The Long Lost Mia Michaels Post (for those already in SYTYCD withdrawal)

3 Oct

I promise that this will be the last post about So You Think You Can Dance for those of you who would rather be hit by a bus than watch another Travis Wall contemporary piece. I do understand your frustration and lack of interest in this area. But before I end my streak, I need to reminisce about the week that SYTYCD had their best idea ever: the best of Mia Michaels week. Hallelujah! Why hasn’t this been done every week, I asked myself?!? It was magical. The best part, for me, was not watching the current dancers try to re-do the original choreography. That actually made me feel bad because I didn’t think any of the new versions held up to the originals. What made me so elated was being reminded of what a genius Mia Michaels is and then proceeding to go back and watch all of my favorite dances on YouTube. And that’s what I’ve compiled here: my all-time favorite Mia Michaels pieces. Even those of you dance haters will be able to appreciate how beautiful, creative, smart, and moving each of these dances are. (I might be projecting a little. Feel free to hate away. I guess it’s a free country).

So You Think You Can Dance – Top Six and Final Four!!

People. Tonight is the SYTYCD finale. Are you excited?!? It is down to four contestants: Eliana, Chehon, Tiffany, and Cyrus. I think it is a wee bit of a cop out that they’re picking a final guy and a final girl as the winners, but I’ll need to get over that. When I last wrote about SYTYCD, it was down to eight. Obviously, I am lagging behind once again and this post will include some catching up.

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 16

17 Aug

There were two things that I discovered I liked this week which led me to my Top 16 pick.

 Thing #1: Lindsay.

I’m not just another blonde! I’m a blonde named Lindsay!

You might know Lindsay as one of the two blonde ballroom dancers that look and dance alike. For that reason (and I have mentioned this before), they rule each other out and I never remember/care about either of them. Didn’t you think of this, “So You Think You Can Dance” decision makers? Putting a bunch of dancers that all look and dance alike makes it impossible for people to care about one. The girl I remember most every week is Amelia, mostly because she’s so pale and she loves to look like she’s been kidnapped and doesn’t know where she is.

I’m just a dainty forest nymph that accidentally knows how to dance good!

But I digress.

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 18

9 Aug

The dance I chose this week as my favorite makes it evident that I didn’t find much to like in this week’s episode. No – I take that back. There was a Sonya Tayeh dance that I liked okay. But sometimes I get sick of myself choosing moody contemporary pieces as my go-to favorites.

You’re 8 years old and pretending to be stuck in a box of sadness that even you don’t understand? Yeah, I’ll still probably pick your dance over the tango.

So this week I broke free from my box of sadness! I chose a foxtrot as my favorite! Listen. It isn’t the greatest dance I’ve ever seen, but it’s so sweet and classic. Sometimes I just want dance to look like a Fred Astaire movie rather than some depressing suicidal love story directed by Quentin Tarantino. And this dance satisfied that need. I hope you enjoy it. If you don’t, I’m sure “Pulp Fiction” is on Showtime or something, you dark hearted happiness hater.

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 20

29 Jul

I was a bit underwhelmed this week. Sure, there were some standout routines, but overall here’s what I’m always thinking: wait, which blonde ballroom dancer is that? Hold up, which petite brunette is that again? Wait a minute, is he also a ballerina learning to relax, “Save the Last Dance” style?

She is REALLY learning to relax! Look at her posture!

I did LOVE the group number (way to go, Christopher Scott, who I always forget about because I don’t really know who you are).

I’m looking at this picture and I already forgot who you are again.

But the highlight was the Travis Wall piece to “Unchained Melody.” Travis Wall is like the new Mia Michaels to me, in that I like almost everything he does and I get excited about it. The girl in this is one of the petite brunettes I can’t tell apart and the dude looks like Ryan Gosling (don’t get too cocky, poor man’s Ryan. You look vaguely like him). Apparently they have real names, which are Matthew and Audrey. I prefer to refer to them as Unidentified and Ryan, though, so feel free to follow suit. Not only does Unidentified do a giant leap into Ryan’s arms when the music gets big, but when she is laying on top of him and arches her back into the air, I have a heart attack because that takes some major back muscles. It is gorgeous. Watch for it. If it doesn’t make your back hurt out of empathy, I don’t know what will. Empathy back pain is a highly underrated emotional state.

So You Think You Can Dance is on Wednesdays on Fox.

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 20 Preview

9 Jul

I really like “So You Think You Can Dance.” I used to dance, so it’s fun to watch people remind me that I was never very good.

This is my first installment of my favorite “So You Think You Can Dance” dance of the week. I will do this weekly, whether people like it or not. I also put this as my Facebook post, so there is really no escaping my obsessive pushiness of 3 minute dance clips.

This is the episode where they showcased who made it into the top 20. I have to be honest, I wasn’t gaga over anyone. But then, along came a piece created by Mia Michaels, who always reminds me of how amazingly beautiful choreography can be.

With that said, here is my favorite number of Episode 1! Welcome back, Mia Michaels, you crazy spiky haired lass.
