Science fact: fall is the best season. There’s plenty of potential for warm days, but the overnights are almost guaranteed to be crisp and chilly; better than any air conditioner could ever offer.
Despite my love affair with the pre-winter season, I always find myself using this time of year to get reacquainted with all of my most favorite sadsack songs; full of broken hearts and loneliness and loss. Maybe it’s my inner goth, but when the air starts to carry that earthy aroma of decaying leaves, I start seeking out those bleak songs like a despondent moth to an open flame.
Maybe it has something to do with spending the previous few months gorging on the endless bounty of summertime-friendly pop music. Or maybe it’s that continuing to listen to Primadonna on repeat would fundamentally clash with bundling up in a jacket and scarf.
While I’m looking forward to the next batch of earworm-y summer trash music, I thought I’d share the playlist that’s been on repeat on my iPod for the last month or so. If you don’t have Spotify, this playlist won’t work for you. So why not download Spotify while you’re at it? There’s even a free version!
Cozy Music for Sweater Weather
Do you guys have any songs or albums that you turn to when the leaves start to fall? This entry is really just a ploy to make sure I’m not alone in my seasonal-specific music tastes.
I really enjoyed “despondent moth”. Kudos.
I have been listening to an unreasonable amount of David Byrne. First his stuff with St. Vincent and Arcade Fire, and now I have gotten more old school with my listening.
I’m not sure if that falls into the sadsack category or not now that I think about it.
I keep forgetting to check out the David Byrne/St. Vincent collaboration, even though I keep hearing all sorts of good things about it. Adding it to my Spotify playlist now!
I love sadsack music. My friend said I listen to crybaby cowboy music. Call it what you like, I think this playlist is fabulous!
Also, I was just listening to Dark Dark Dark’s new album and that is definitely sadsack fall music.
I second the Dark Dark Dark comment.
I will add this to my list too!
