So You Think You Can Dance – Top Six and Final Four!!

People. Tonight is the SYTYCD finale. Are you excited?!? It is down to four contestants: Eliana, Chehon, Tiffany, and Cyrus. I think it is a wee bit of a cop out that they’re picking a final guy and a final girl as the winners, but I’ll need to get over that. When I last wrote about SYTYCD, it was down to eight. Obviously, I am lagging behind once again and this post will include some catching up.

Top Six:

It seems like every week that I say Eliana is my favorite lady dancer, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never actually chosen one of her pieces as my favorite. That is, until now folks! Eliana’s duet with Cole was Be.Au.Ti.Ful. Before I mention the three most gorgeous things about this piece, I want to say that none of them include anything about Cole. While that may be, I think it is criminal that he isn’t in the top four. And also, are we forgetting that his “dance style” is martial arts? HIS THING IS FANCY KARATE. I wasn’t even aware that this genre could count. He’s amazing. Okay, on to the great things:

  1. Watch Eliana’s feet. They are astoundingly lovely and detailed and when she goes from a pointed foot into a slow, spread out flexed foot, it is gorgeous. I appreciate those kinds of details in choreography. They’re subtle, but powerful.
  2. The moment when Cole (oh, there he is!) holds Eliana’s leg and she leans all the way over to the right so far that you think she’s going to fall over, but she doesn’t. Don’t get scared, guys. She’s safe.
  3.  Every movement of Eliana’s is like a freeze frame. Choreographers always say that they want to be able to “take a picture” to express that they want each move to count and to be complete. Eliana consistently executes this. When Cole holds her by the waist and spins her around, she is supposed to appear frozen, but it reminded me of how she is able to give me that same feeling of taking a picture each time she performs.

I feel like I’m maybe talking this one up a little too much, but you can judge for yourself:

Final Four:

I had a tough time nailing down my favorite piece this week, so I picked three. The coincidence is that I have managed to get all four dancers covered! Good for me.

The first is Allison and Chehon. I think I am bit biased because Once is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the music is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, so I might be drawn to the song. But Allison’s dancing is pretty nutty. Like, stunningly nutty good. I could watch her all day. And Chehon – well, if he doesn’t win… I won’t be at all surprised, but I’ll be disappointed. He is an incredible partner and he jumps so flipping high that I get scared he’ll hit a piece of the set and get knocked out. Also, a bonus is that they kiss at the end and I really love watching closely to see if one person is enjoying it a little too much or is completely disgusted and freaked out. Both reactions are equally pleasing to me.

My next pick is the pas de deux danced by Eliana and Chehon. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a classical ballet piece on SYTYCD (I could be wrong, and if I wasn’t so lazy I would look this up, but let’s just go with it). I probably haven’t seen it because I don’t think there have ever been two ballerinas on the same season, let alone in the top four. Eliana and Chehon are GORGEOUS dancers and I think it is so exciting that they were able to do such a classic piece of choreography together. Like the judges said at the end, it doesn’t look like Chehon is doing much, but dude is hardcore partnering. That shit is difficult, but he makes it look effortless. And, at the end, when Eliana is doing the pirouettes into an extension AND NEVER COMING DOWN OFF OF HER POINTE IN BETWEEN, I have a heart attack. It is so lovely and, also, my calves cramp up just watching it. That is not easy. And I know, because I have never tried it. Enjoy!

I am generally not a huge fan of Tiffany. When they did their pre-taped interview with her, she cried because she’s so happy to be in the top four, even though the judges told her at the beginning that no one could remember who she is. Right when she said that, I looked at my husband and asked, “Which one is she again?” Sorry, Tiffany. Some of America still doesn’t remember who you are. But obviously a lot do, so mazel tov! I tend to find her a little competition-y for my taste. She is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but very cookie cutter.

I feel fairly neutral about Cyrus. I don’t think he should win, but he will, so I’m trying not to dislike him. He is incredible at what he does, I just tend to get annoyed when a dancer becomes the natural underdog because he or she isn’t well trained, yet can keep up. At the same time, he is very talented and cute and entertaining, so I won’t be mad when he wins tonight. I love this dance because a) it’s Beyonce. What’s not to love about a Beyonce song?  and b) I love thrashy hip hop numbers. It kind of reminds me of this little gem that is still one of the best SYTYCD pieces ever.

Bonus: watch for when Tiffany “walks away” from Cyrus doing those body rolls and waving her arms. Then picture a 7 ½ month pregnant person trying to imitate that in her living room. It’s not pretty, but it happened. More than once.

PREDICTED WINNERS: Eliana and Cyrus. Mark my words, three people reading this.

I cried PRETTY HARD during the ballet piece. Mostly because it reminded me how fat and unathletic I’ve become since my youth dance days. Did you know Glen Hansard is playing next week at First Ave? I’m going and very excited!

Wasn’t it gorgeous?!? I did not know about Glen Hansard, by the way. I love him. I saw him and Marketa play at the State Theatre. He tells lots and lot of stories. Like, a lot. But it’s very charming and Irish. Have fun!

I think in some ways this show was the better of the last two, because the choreography was so awesome and the dances so difficult. I think the producers told the choreographers to really push them because they knew they had a great top 6. It really paid off for the audience though. The finale was amazing too though, with the big numbers. I’m glad I saw the show because sometimes, in the past, I missed a show when a sporting event changed the time of the show, like the Olympics did this year. Since I have my Hopper with PrimeTime Anytime now though, it records the show no matter what time it changes to, during prime time. That’s a relief when I’m expecting my DISH coworkers to come over for a finale party!
